September 8 - March 10
Mexico’s white-wing dove population is sky rocketing across the entire country, and Sonora is no different! With Gambino’s one can shoot a resident population of either White-wing doves or Mourning Doves in good numbers. While not Argentina, Mexico is the next best thing! Frank Ruiz has been operating in Cuidad Obregon for many years, his experience and longevity have seen him lease the best ranches and farms for his hunters. Doves fly morning and afternoon, from good blinds. A bird boy for every shooter, the birdboy attends to whatever you may need, retrieves your birds, helps load the gun and watches for birds coming. The birdboys are some of the best in the business! Mexico white wing hunts in this area are primarily shot over sorghum, corn, sesame, and occasionally soybeans.
November – early March
Some of the best duck hunting you’ll find anywhere, Gambino’s has gone a step beyond the norm by building his own custom duck lake, by flooding several thousand acres of desert. The pool is normally just inches deep and varies to a foot or so. In addition to the man-made habitat, this area of Coastal Sonora is one the duck populations main wintering areas. From November to March the area is teeming with waterfowl and shore birds. Playas and fresh water ponds situated next to or in agricultural fields are also a guest favorite. Guests should bring hip-boots as there is no need for full blown waders. Ducks are hunted in the morning with a dove shoot or Quail hunt to follow in the afternoon. Ducks are only shot in the morning. Specie specific decoys and good handmade blinds are the norm, scouts are constantly looking for the next opportunity and will report in the evenings what they’ve found. Giving the guest a level of excitement for the next day.
November - March
Gambels’ or Elegant quail are an option at Gambino’s, hunted in the walk-up style, both are readily hunted in the afternoons. Gambel’s Quail can be found very near the lodge and are the most common in the lower elevations. Good numbers of 10 – 15 flushes in an afternoon walking is the norm for the Gambel’s while the Elegant Quail is found in the higher elevations and is a more difficult hunt, regardless of difficulty this is one of the few areas with a quality population of Elegant Quail a species found only in this mountainous area of Western Mexico. When all things are considered, the two species of quail found in the Yaqui Valley are two of the rarest and most beautiful. One can expect to flush 5- 7 covey’s in an afternoon of chasing Elegant Quail.
